EMBARCADERO 10

THE CHALLENGE WITH THIS PROJECT WAS FITTING A VARIETY OF PROGRAM IN A THIN AND NARROW SITE ALONG THE MIAMI RIVER AND COMPLETEING THE PROJECT IN ABOUT 5 WEEKS. tHE PROGRAM INCLUDED A LOCAL ROASTERY, CAFE, WATER TAXI, GALLERY, CO- OFFICE, AND FRUIT AND SPICE MARKET. WE APPROACHED THIS CHALLENGE BY SEPARATING THE DIFFERENT USES INTO ITS OWN VOLUMES WITHIN ONE OVERALL ROOF. WE LOOKED AT THE FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE POST AND LINTEL SYSTEM TO CREATE A STRAIGHTFORWARD BUILDING THAT USES MATERIALS SUCH AS CONCRETE, GLASS, AND WOOD. THE STREET SIDE IS PROTECTED WITH SHEAR WALLS THAT RISE TO 40’, WHILE THE RIVER SIDE IS OPEN TO UNITERRUPTED VIEWS. WE ALSO KEPT IN MIND THE DEVELOPING AREA AROUND, AND CREATED A THIRD ROOF FACADE THAT INCLUDES A PATTERNED GREEN ROOF THAT FOLLOWS THE PERIMETER.
